Abstract

To date, music research has scarcely been able to construct a knowledge that could designate the specific instruments used by the actors in contemporary improvisational music for their special forms of musical action and communication. This applies in particular to percussionists. In contrast to saxophonists on this scene, who learned to use their instruments, which are products of standardized industrial production, in order to produce sounds in a highly individualized way, the percussionist has at his command a highly individualized assortment of objects. This article attempts to show which materials are used in performance and in what order by Roger Turner, one of the principal drummers from the second British generation of this music.
